What are fillers?
Temporary fillers are usually made of hyaluronic acid . Hyaluronic acid is natural body substance . Injectable hyaluronic acid is synthesized in lab and cross linked to last for a certain period of time after injecting into human tissue. Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually metabolized by body and disappears completely in 6 months-1 yr. Permanent fillers are not metabolized by body.
What are the different choices in fillers?
- Juvederm Ultra and Ultraplus: This is FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler lasting upto 1 year
- Restylene and Perlane:Similar to juvederm, lasts for 6 months
- Radiesse: It’s FDA approved Calcium Hydroxyapetite filler for deeper filling. It lasts upto 2 years.
Aquamid: This is polyacrylamide gel filler for deeper filling.
Are filler injections painful?
Fillers are injected with very fine needles. Usually local anaesthesia in form of cream or injection whatever is appropriate depending on the site, is used. Therefore pain is minimal.
How much time does it take for filler treatment?
Usually 15-30 minutes depending on number of areas.
What is the downtime after filler injections?
Area may be pink or slightly swollen for 24-48 hrs. In certain areas like lips swelling may last for upto 1 week. Bruising may occur at injection site occasionally. Most of the times one need not take break from routine activities, but it is best to do filler injection before a weekend and avoid doing filler injection 1 week or less before any important event.
What aftercare is required ?
Ice application soon after filler injection in clinic, helps minimize swelling. Avoid massaging the area for next 48 hours.
How long does the effect of filler last?
Different brands of temporary fillers are available lasting upto 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. After that time injection may be repeated to maintain the result.
Which filler is better, temporary or permanent?
Which filler right for you can be decided after individual assessment. Permanent fillers are availablein the market but their long term safety is not proven.
Which one is better for removing wrinkles- filler injections or botox?
Botox and fillers work differently, on different kind of wrinkles. Personal assessment is required to determine what is best for you. Botox and fillers can also be combined.
Are there alternatives to filler injections?
Surgical options are available for chin enhancement, cheek enhancement and lip enhancement. Fat injections are other alternative for certain indications. For aging eyelids eyelid surgery may be appropriate. Advanced facial sagging may require facelift surgery.
